It will readily be conceded that anything that will enhance the general health of the body and mind will also exercise a beneficial influence upon any "specific" or "local" disease.

For this reason I feel justified in writing this chapter on the value of Healing Clay.

All living things have developed out of the crust of our earth, including man himself, life being maintained by the earth's various constituents as well as by cosmic forces acting and reacting upon the earth. It should then not be surprising, or difficult to understand, how a certain kind of soil can possess healing properties when taken internally, or if applied externally as compresses and packs.

In these days of artificial fertilizers and poisonous sprays, our fruits and vegetable foods must, as a consequence, be deficient in minerals so essential to our well-being. These, fortunately, can, to some extent, be made good by taking internally certain kinds of "primitive" soil in the form of clay or earth of volcanic origin. The taking of "Healing Earth" can be looked upon as a biochemical radium cure, as will be made clear later.

RADIOACTIVITY OF SOILS:

Professor J. Stoklasa of Prague once referred to the extra­ordinary favorable effect the radioactivity of our soil had upon the life therein and, therefore, upon the soil upon which the plant-world grew. He stated that radium was present in all soils.

In order that he could measure the quantity of radium in a given soil he named a unit, which amounted to one-thousandth of a milligram in 1,000 kilos of soil (that would be according to homoeopathic standards an attenuation of 12 X, an attenuation which is often exceeded in homoeopathic and biochemical practice).

He ascertained that soils which have evolved out of rock of volcanic origin possess a far stronger radioactivity than those formed of chalk, sandstone and other sedimentary deposits. Soils that have arisen from granite contain, for example, 2.58 of the aforementioned unit, and those from recent volcanic rocks—trachyte, basalt, etc.— somewhat less. In soils of diluvia origin, to which belong the various clays used as a remedy, only 0.46 of the above unit of radium is present.

From this it will be seen that the soils of volcanic origin are more potent than those others. The healing earth of Swiss origin is a disintegration of volcanic rocks of porphyritic constituents. According to Professor Stoklasa it contains 2.32 parts of radium of the stated unit; i.e., jive times as much as diluvia clay.

Searching observations have shown that the dosage for a favourable action of the healing earth used internally depends upon its homoeopathic radium content.

When considering radioactivity it should be mentioned that radium radiates three kinds of rays which are differentiated by the Greek letter or sign, alpha, beta, gamma of which the first is of special interest in that it can harm the oxidation process in our blood, whilst the mild beta and gamma rays are of importance for the organism.

It is known that the terrestrial rays, i.e., the rays that emanate from our earth's crust, belong to the gamma group. Hence we have to thank, above all, the gamma rays of radium for the curative effect of the healing earth, besides its other components.

A lady had for many years sought help of several doctors for a complaint, to which all kinds of names had been given, and which had not been successfully diagnosed, but after taking healing earth masses of pin-worms were eliminated. These had been at the bottom of her undiagnosed trouble.

HEALING CRISIS:

When, on occasions, a worsening of the symptoms takes place, say in the alimentary tract, such as vomiting, temporary constipation, diarrhoea, etc., this often indicates that a healing process is beginning, which is never feared by those who understand the healing crisis in what is known as Nature Cure. It is rather to be looked upon as the first sign of a promising response to the treatment.

CHRONIC CONDITIONS:

The great value of the healing earth manifests itself more especially in stubborn, chronic diseases when the earth is taken daily over a period of some months.

Most chronic diseases, if not indeed all, are due to laziness of the bowels brought about and maintained by a long period of constipation.

ABSORPTIVE POWERS OF HEALING EARTH:

Absorption can apply equally to gases as also to fluids and solids. It is claimed that there is no other known means that so surely and permanently removes constipation than the internal use of healing earth, which can be looked upon as a food supplementing one's diet on food reform lines. Among the actions of the healing earth used EXTERNALLY in the form of compresses and packs is its absorptive quality indicated by the rapid healing of wounds, suppurations, etc.

In certain parts of Bavaria after a rainfall children have been noticed to eat the sodden earth with apparent relish, and the appear­ance of these children was that of radiant health. This instinctive action must have been observed by such great pioneers of Nature Cure as Priessnitz, Father Kneipp, Kiihne, Rikli, Just, etc., as it is on record that some of them used earth in their healing work. Animals, too, instinctively eat the soil.

SKIN DISEASES:

On one occasion a patient asked my advice about her very valuable dog, which was afflicted with a frightful skin disease with which no vet could cope. I prescribed "Healing Clay" and after a few weeks of the dog being given this clay in its food daily and sprinkled dry on to the sores, the disease cleared up completely.

THE POWER OF THE INFINITESIMAL:

Experiment has shown that if one puts silver into distilled water and leaves it there for a few hours, this water will show a considerable biological action in that it will have a germicidal effect upon bacteria introduced into the distilled water; yet by no known method can silver be detected in the water itself. That the water HAS undergone a change is indicated by its biological action upon the bacteria.

If anyone wishes to have proof of the power of the infinitesimal dose in homoeopathy then he certainly has it in this experiment.

One estimates the attenuation of the silver in the aforementioned activated water as 30x to 40x potency. But a still greater attenuation is shown in the following example: When a glass containing the activated water is emptied and again rinsed out with distilled water and dried, and this procedure is repeated over and over again as often as one will there is always manifested in the new water the same phenomenon in that the bacteria placed in the water are killed. The glass cannot otherwise free itself from this phenomenon except by boiling with concentrated acid, e.g., nitric acid. We are here up against a secret of nature for which there is no explanation at the moment.

The action of the healing earth upon the organism belongs, to a certain extent, to the above phenomenon. For example, the fact that water that is mixed with the earth and, after it has settled, is poured off absolutely clear, will still evidence a characteristic action on a fever when applied as a compress, in that pain is more speedily removed than is the case with an ordinary Priessnitz cold water compress.
